MKELive Will “Ignite” Business Passion and Creativity for March LinkedIn-Milwaukee Event

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

(MILWAUKEE, WI) This is the big one.

On Monday, March 1st, MKELive and LinkedIn-Milwaukee will literally link thousands of entrepreneurs, technologists, “do-it-yourselfers,” creative professionals, and enthusiastic knowledge-seekers from around the world for an evening that is a unique blend of networking, information, and fun.

LinkedIn-Milwaukee will participate in Global Ignite Week (March 1-5, 2010), when more than 50 Ignite meetings will take place in cities around the world. Ignite meetings are comprised of talks that are exactly five minutes long, where presenters share their personal and professional passions that fit within the Ignite motto: “Enlighten us, but make it quick.”

Like other meetings throughout the week, LinkedIn-Milwaukee’s Ignite will stream live video during the event. Those videos will be archived on the new Ignite video site that is being launched in conjunction with the week-long event. At least 500 five-minute session videos will be available on the new site when it debuts.

“This is an opportunity for local business professionals to gain different entrepreneurial perspectives from around the nation and around the world,” said Katie Felten, president MKE Live. “People who attend will have the chance to see how business owners from different regions and cultures approach and share the same dream of owning successful businesses.”

Started by Brady Forrest, Technology Evangelist for O’Reilly Media, and Bre Pettis of Etsy.com, formerly of MAKE Magazine, Ignite was inspired by Pecha Kucha Nights, where speakers are given 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds, giving each speaker 6 minutes and 40 seconds of fame. The first Ignite took place in Seattle in 2006, and since then the event has become an international phenomenon, with gatherings in Helsinki, Finland; Paris, France; New York, New York; and many other locations.

The March MKELive LinkedIn-Milwaukee event will be held on Monday, March 1st from 5:30-8:30 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Wauwatosa (located at 10499 Innovation Drive, Wauwatosa, WI 53226). The registration fee for walk-up attendees is $15. Attendees that pre-register at www.mkelive.com will only be charged $10.

LinkedIn Tips and Ideas – Expert Interview with Katie Felten

Monday, July 20th, 2009

I was recently in OH for some client meetings and I took some time over lunch to connect with Travis Campbell – Marketing Professor http://www.marketingprofessor.com/. In an exclusive and impromptu interview with me, Katie Felten, I share 3 tips or strategies to keep you in front of your LinkedIn connections on a regular basis.

Ugh… You know WHO?

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

You know those “ugh” moments? Those instances where you realize you’ve missed something really obvious? Like when you’re frantically looking for your keys only to realize that you’ve been holding them the entire time?

(Not that I know anything about that.)

I was laid off… and trying to re-launch a business (it’s a long story). I knew that finding the solution to both challenges necessitated reconnecting with a lot of people and seeing if they could connect me to some decision-makers. A quick review of my LinkedIn contacts showed that I was closer than I expected to meeting some of these new faces. At first I felt relieved and empowered!

This was quickly overcome with a short but intense bout of embarrassment and humiliation.

The connections had always been there – just keystrokes away – and through people I’ve known for a long time. I unintentionally dismissed how well-connected and important my personal contacts really were. I was guilty of a very naïve assumption – “If I don’t know someone important, you probably don’t either.”

For my contacts that may be reading this, I’m REALLY sorry.

When was the last time you blocked out an hour to do nothing but inventory whom your friends/associates have listed as their contacts on LinkedIn? This time could be as eye-opening an experience for you as it was for me. And, if nothing else, it will serve as a brainstorming session: (“That’s interesting. I never thought of connecting with someone from that company.”)

I don’t take it for granted any more. As soon as someone accepts an invitation to connect with me (or vice versa), the first thing I do is review their connections. There may be nothing but new ideas. Or there may be the need to prioritize the order of people I would like to be introduced to.

You just never know… but your connections might.

It was certainly a lesson worth learning. Of course, now I’m burdened with waiting for my next “ugh” moment to hit.

Now where the hell did I put my keys?

How to Really Use LinkedIn

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

I came across this article on Forbes.com and since I recently read this book after my friend Wayne Breitbarth recommended it.
I thought I would share it here. Jan does a great job of explaining how to use LinkedIn and he also gets into strategy. He also does free LinkedIn webinars and I am signed up for one of June 24th.

It can be a great networking and job-seeking tool–better than most people know

It’s virtually impossible to hear career advice these days without being told to join LinkedIn. The professional networking Web site has become vastly popular because of how its multitude of features allow users to find and connect to relevant people in their professional world.

But how do you make the most of it to your own professional advantage? That’s what networking expert Jan Vermeiren tries to answer in his latest book, How to REALLY Use LinkedIn, which you can get a condensed version of for free online. read more

Milwaukee marketing companies organize social media conference

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Trivera Interactive, Corporate Identity Solutions and Clear Verve Marketing have joined forces to develop Social Media University, an educational event in Milwaukee that will provide hands-on learning and real-life examples of the most prominent social media tools in use today.
The event, conceived by Tom Snyder, president and chief executive officer of Trivera Interactive, will be held on Wednesday, July 29, at the Italian Conference Center, 631 E. Chicago St., Milwaukee.
Social Media University will be a day-long learning event for business owners, executives or marketing professionals interested in maximizing their business’ use of social media. The event will feature hands-on learning from experts drawn from the Milwaukee creative and business community.
The event will bring together local social media experts who will share real-life experiences with social media and help business owners embrace best practices for this new era of communications.

Presenters will include:

  • Chris Remington and Katie Fleming – Trivera Interactive.
  • Sue Marks – Pinstripe Talent.
  • Augie Ray – Fullhouse.
  • Jon Kurozawa – K6 Marketing.
  • Christina Steder – Clear Verve Marketing.
  • Katie Felten – MKELive.com.
  • Sara Meaney – Comet Branding.
  • Blake Samic – Actions Talk.
  • Scott Baitinger – Streetza Pizza.
  • Joe Woelfle – Blatz Liquor.
  • Phil Gerbyshak – The “Make it Great Guy.”

A keynote presentation will be delivered by Jay Steinfeld, CEO of Blinds.com, who will share how one of America’s largest online brands has used the power of the Web, first to build a small business into an Internet powerhouse, and now, through social media, to turn his brand’s fan base into the fuel for greater success.
The event will be followed by a “Tweetup” on Twitter, organized by Corporate Identity Solutions (also known online as “@TweetupGirls”).
Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptop computers so they can immediately apply what they learn to their companies.
“As an interactive marketing company, many of our clients were approaching us with questions on nearly every aspect of social media,” Snyder said. “Because social media is growing and changing so quickly, it is difficult for many people, even marketers, to keep up with all the changes. We felt that if we brought together a group of people we admired and gave business owners the opportunity to learn from these subject matter experts, attendees would walk away with a complete experience at a much higher level than we could provide by hosting a short event on our own.”
Tickets for the event are $95 per seat and are available online at www.socialmediamilwaukee.com. For more information, contact Snyder at (262) 250-9400.
